I attended a beautiful graduation ceremony this evening for my niece and nephew at St. Ursula’s Church. The celebration concluded with the song “We Are Called”. As the song was playing I thought, what am I called to do? What are you called to do? What are we all called to do?
When I think of those words, I interpret that as; what is my purpose in life? I believe we all have a purpose. Many of us go through life searching and searching for that purpose. Some of us discover our purpose at an early age, while others discover it later in life. Some may never discover their purpose at all. It depends where you are on your journey in life. Are you open to a purpose at all? Napoleon Hill says in his book,”Think and Grow Rich”, “when the student is ready the teacher will come.” When you’re ready to discover your purpose it will show up. An awareness will over come you in some way, shape or form. A light bulb will go off! The key is to be open to it.
I think we fight it sometimes. Our purpose or vocation could be right in front of our eyes but we ignore it or don’t see it at all because we are too busy trying to be someone we are not supposed to be or we are too busy attempting to accomplish something we’re not supposed to accomplish.
In July of 1990, my life’s journey took on a new direction. It began with the reading of a book, “The Greatest Salesman in the World”, by Ogg Mandino. I read that one book, then another, and another, and several hundred more over the next twenty-three years. I have continued to take in the good stuff and create new habits. Having said that, the more I’ve read the more insight I’ve been given. I became a student of life and I will forever be a student of life. My desire to be that student has allowed new awareness to come into my life and has brought me closer to fulfilling my purpose.
As the song came to an end a light bulb went off for me. The song ends with the following words:
”We are called to act with justice,
We are called to love tenderly,
We are called to serve one another;
To walk humbly with God!”
Yes, I have read hundreds of books and have gained many insights over the years. I am grateful for that. I encourage others to read to gain new insights as well, but how awesome is it to know that we just do what the above words suggest; what a peaceful life we could live?
Act with justice, love tenderly, serve one another, and walk humbly with God my friends!
Til next time…..
